#AskForZarni campaign helps Yangon bars fight harassment
Carolin Hirsch, PhD candidate at the working group Political Anthropology has co-founded an initiative for awareness raising of sexual harassment and assault in the public space.
During her 6 months stay in Yangon, where she was conducting fieldwork for her PhD project, she started the movement Break the Silence: #AskForZarni together with a group of local and non-local people. Sexual harassment and assault are a rising problem in the public space in Yangon and the movement is for now targeting nightlife venues. The aim of the initiative is to set up an infrastructure where people who are experiencing sexual harassment and assault can discreetly ask for assistance and where members of the bar and security staff are trained to identify and intervene in such situations.
