Career prospects

Following your graduation you have various career opportunities, for the most part because of the comparative, international and research-based approach of this study programme. Career opportunities can include jobs in:

• cultural, media and educational institutions;
• project development and project management in multicultural contexts;
• national and international migration and refugee work;
• intercultural consulting for organisations and in political institutions;
• private enterprises that require intercultural competencies;
• counselling, supervising, monitoring and evaluating intercultural projects.

If you prefer to opt for research and teaching you also have the option of following up your master’s degree with doctoral studies.

Study structure

In the M.A. in Ethnology and Sociology, you can choose between an ethnological and a sociological focus. On this page you will find study structures with ethnological or sociological project seminars (in German).

• Above-average degree (minimum degree: Bachelor of Arts or equivalent) with the grade "good" (2.5) or better of a three-year (or more) study programme in a subject related to the two disciplines involved in the Master's Programme at a state or state-accredited institution of higher education. Our selection committee decides whether you meet the requirements stated above.
• A letter of motivation (two DIN A4 pages or more) stating why you are interested in the Master's Programme Anthropology and Sociology as well as your expectations and professional ambitions in future. This letter can also be written in English.
• If you have not yet completed your BA degree by the end of the application deadline, please attach the official documentation of all your academic achievements so far as well as your current average grade.

Semester fee
All students enrolled at the University of Konstanz are charged a semester fee each semester, similar to all other German universities. Here you can find the current semester fee and its individual components.

Tuition fees for first degree studies for certain international students
Since winter semester 2017/18, the state of Baden-Württemberg has required some international students to pay tuition fees for their first degree studies. The following students are not required to pay tuition fees: citizens of a country within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), doctoral students and certain “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. non-EU citizens with a German “Abitur”). Each year, the University of Konstanz grants exemptions to a limited number of particularly gifted international degree-seeking students in accordance with the university’s “Begabtenbefreiungssatzung” (statutes governing the exemption of gifted students). Tuition fees for second degree studies for all students
All students are required to pay tuition fees for their second degree studies. More detailed information can be found here.

Foreign language skills
You do not have to document any additional foreign language skills.

German language skills
International applicants need documentation of their German language skills, level DSH-2 or TestDaF 4. Alternatively, other language tests or school certificates recognized as equivalent can be used as proof of the required German language skills.

The language usually used in class and during examinations is German. Some courses are taught in English. Course work can also be completed in English.

• Independent thinking and structured approach to work.
• Willingness to read intensely and widely.
• Good English skills

• Documentation of your academic degree. If you have not yet received your official degree certificate, please enclose confirmation of all performance assessments completed until the date of registration as well as your preliminary average grade.

• Letter of motivation

International applicants:

• If your documents are not available in German or English, you will need to have them translated. Please submit a German or English translation of your documents along with the original versions.
• Documentation of German language skills, level DSH-2 or TestDaF 4, or a language test recognised as equivalent;
• Applicants from China, India and Vietnam: APS certificate (original) issued by the German Embassy of your home country

An application is possible during the following period: 07.05. - 15.07. | 29.11. - 15.01.
