One for All. The Student Survey in Germany

Project: Integrated Student Survey

The current research project is a subproject of the joint survey “One for All. The Student Survey in Germany” (“Eine für alle. Die Studierendenbefragung in Deutschland”), which is conducted in cooperation with the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Study (DZHW) and the German National Association for Student Affairs (Deutsches Studentenwerk DSW) and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project duration started in April 2019 and will end in March 2022. This nationwide survey was planned for the 2020 summer semester, but had to be postponed by one year due to the Corona crisis. Further information on the entire project can be found at www.die-studierendenbefragung.de, at Joint Press Release (in German language) and at https://www.jmwiarda.de/2021/05/04/eine-millionen-teilnehmer/ (in German language).

This largest student survey in Germany began on May 4, 2021. A total of about one million randomly selected students at approximately 250 universities were invited to participate in the survey. The survey phase ended in September 2021, and the data will be processed, reviewed and coded by spring 2022, which will take a long time due to several open-ended responses. After that, the analyses of the data and the preparations for the publications will begin.

Parts of the topics of the Student Survey will be continued in the new integrated project, so that developments over time can still be presented. The task of the Research Group on Higher Education in this subproject is the development of three different modules for the survey of student orientations.

The main focus of these three modules is:

  1. Attitudes Towards Politics and Society
  2. Inequality and Fairness in Studies and Society
  3. Attitudes, Expectations and Problems in Transitions to Higher Education and within the Higher Education System, consiting of three subgroups:
    • Transition to Higher Education (first-year up to the 3rd semester)
    • Tranistion to the Master's Progam (mainly Bachelor's students from 4th semester onwards)
    • Transition to Doctoral Studies (mainly Master student)

The project will continue from April 2023 to March 2024 with new tasks. In this extension year, two tasks are pending, which will be carried out by the Research Group on Higher Education:

  1. A report on the study situation, taking into account the digitalization of studies;
    the report was published at december 2023.
  2. A merger and alignment of the data sets of the SiD (project: integrated student survey) and the student survey;
    planned until March 2024..
