Sociology – Master of Arts
This Master's degree builds upon the foundational knowledge gained in a Bachelor's degree in sociology, and offers a research-oriented program that is focused on current questions and pressing issues. The program emphasizes small seminar groups and personalized attention, allowing you to engage deeply with topics such as media and communication, politics and protest, and social theory. By taking an international comparative perspective, you will develop a nuanced understanding of the role of mass media and digital communication in shaping the public sphere and personal self-presentation, of political mobilization and social movements, and of sociological perspectives on culture, communication and social networks.
One of the unique features of this program is its interdisciplinary approach, with joint modules in history, media studies, and political and administrative science that promote collaboration and exchange across disciplinary boundaries. Unlike other MA programs at Konstanz and elsewhere, the MA in Sociology also offers a broad range of advanced research methods, including qualitative, quantitative and computational approaches. Through an intensive project seminar and a six-month thesis, you will be directly involved in ongoing sociological research and encouraged to reflect on societal developments. Participation in sociological research colloquia also provides opportunities to engage in sociological debates and contribute to the development of the discipline. Overall, the sociology program at the University of Konstanz provides you with the knowledge and skills to understand and critically analyze major trends and developments in contemporary society.

Study requirements
Admission requirements for studying
- Bachelor's degree in a subject relevant for the study programme (social sciences or the humanities)
- letter of motivation (two DIN A4 pages or more) stating why you choose the Master's Programme in Sociology, your expectations and aims for the study programme.
- International applicants need documentation of their German language skills, level DSH-2 or TestDaF 4, or a language test recognised as equivalent.

Semester fee
All students enrolled at the University of Konstanz are charged a semester fee each semester, similar to all other German universities. Here you can find the current semester fee and its individual components.
Tuition fees for first degree studies for certain international students
Since winter semester 2017/18, the state of Baden-Württemberg has required some international students to pay tuition fees for their first degree studies. The following students are not required to pay tuition fees: citizens of a country within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), doctoral students and certain “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. non-EU citizens with a German “Abitur”). Each year, the University of Konstanz grants exemptions to a limited number of particularly gifted international degree-seeking students in accordance with the university’s “Begabtenbefreiungssatzung” (statutes governing the exemption of gifted students). Required language skills
German language skills
International applicants need documentation of their German language skills, level DSH-2 or TestDaF 4. Alternatively, other language tests or school certificates recognized as equivalent can be used as proof of the required German language skills.
Teaching and examination language
The language usually used in class and during examinations is German. Courses may be taught in English. Course work and academic performance assessments in these courses can be completed also in English.
